As a 17-year-old bioengineering student at New York University, Joe Landolina created a sustainable plant-based gel that stops traumatic bleeding in a matter of seconds. Now, Joe is 29 years old and the co-founder and CEO of Cresilon, a Brooklyn-based biotech startup which develops and manufactures the hemostatic agent in-house. A version of the gel (called VETIGEL®) is now being used by licensed veterinarians across the U.S., U.K., and Canada to treat pets and animals during surgical procedures and emergencies. If Cresilon's gel is cleared for human use, Joe's creation could transform trauma care by stopping severe blood loss in life-threatening wounds -– which can kill in a matter of minutes –- for military members, police officers, and patients.
